4 June 2006

Thank you to everybody for making our last meeting one of the best that we have had!! It is great to see guests sit with us for a meal, and this Club is exceptional at rolling out the welcome wagon for new folks. Again, a pot luck at Forest and Jean's house is always great and the barbecue/eating area is very nice place to eat and converse. Thank you to all of the wives that come and support us.

Monday Jerry, Bruce, Gilbert, John K., Jim, John G. and I played hookie from work to fly. Unfortunately, John Krupa had foul weather at King City, and was unable to get his plane back to Paso to fly with the rest of us. New Member, John Gill showed up bright and early, so I worked in an introductory flight lesson to Forest's house before our group flight. Jim flew out with us and we both did a low level pass up Forest's runway as he waved us on. (Damn those rotor blades look nasty up close when he passes us!!)

Gilbert flew with me, and the group proceeded to Shandon and then on to Chalome, where Jim had to turn his gas guzzler around and head for home while the rest of us dinked around the area. We need to get Jim's two place into the air ASAP so he has more range. Gilbert and I were the slow ones of the group, but we flew high and watched the show the other guys put on. Bruces radio was crystal clear and Jerry's was audible. Sometime I could understand Jim and sometime not. My push to talk button went south, so we could listen, but not talk, so Jerry and Bruce covered our take off and landing approaches for us.

I ordered the same antenna setup today that Bruce has. As we both have the same radio so I hope to be able to communicate as well as he does. I am putting a better push to talk switch in the stick, so that problem should be resolved-the original push to talk button never worked well. I will see how the antenna works before I go after noise suppression on the motor and wiring.

Good thing we played hookie on Monday. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and today we were all socked in with fog during the morning hours and terrible winds in the afternoons. When all of you put your planes in the hanger Monday, I had to fly back to Lockwood in that wind. Very interesting-had to climb to 4,500' to get out of it. I probably looked like a drunk coming in-all over the map!! REAL glad to get onto the ground-made me sick to my stomach.

Been a lot of years getting this Club this far. Thanks to Jerry and Bruce for leaning on the rest of us to join them in a flight. I have flown alone since 1993, and having company is a lot of fun. Maybe we can do this again in a few weeks-I will leave it to Jerry and Bruce to pick another date.

Harris Ranch flyout

Got up at 5am this morning to a 28 degree morning temperature. The Rotax 503 did not want to start-it took some coaxing and a lot of battery. Bruce called with a hold on departure time, as Paso had limited visibility, then finally called with a go at about 7:15.

Bruce, Gilbert, John and I met at KC airport and went over our flight plans to Harris Ranch. Gilbert road with me, and we maxed the Quick out on load, so the 0-5,000 foot climb in 18 miles took some effort. John had about the same climb and cruise as me, but Bruce smoked us on his trike all the way around.

Hazy on the valley side of the hill, but I've flown there many times, and coupled with GPS technology, everyone arrived dead on. I took about an hour and 15 minutes. As cold as it was on the ground, it was very comfortable up top.

The four of us had a great meal at the restaurant, then refueled to head for home. Bruce flew directly back to Paso, while John, Gilbert and I headed for KC. Gilbert got about 2+ hours of stick time, which I have promised him for ages. John and Bruce were impressive for low hour pilots. I think both of them are ready to go anywhere.

My radio and Johns were worthless. Bruce has an exterior antenna, with basically the same helmet and radio as I do, but he was crystal clear and could reach us from miles out. Both John and I sounded like we were talking under water at best. Bruce said Jerry has the equipment to match radios to antennas, and after this trip I believe this is the only way we are going to get good clear radio usage. I think we all need to get together on working this and noise suppression out.

Today was a first for getting a group from this Club flying together, and it was great. We all talked about "next time", and hope to get more members to go with us. Winter is coming, but we can plan for spring!

All had a good time, and all are home safe. What more could you ask for!!
